Watch: First Trailer for Saving Mr. Banks

Not long after the first look at Saving Mr Banks - Disney's retelling of the true story of Walt Disney's quest to adapt Mary Poppins from book to film - was revealed yesterday, the trailer has appeared online.

The trailer (embedded above; YouTube link here, should you need it) debuted over at Moviefone and shows us the first real peak at how Tom Hanks is portraying the happy, albeit-a-bit-egotistical, Walt Disney; we also see Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins's reluctant author, P.L. Travers.

There's a little fear that the true strain of the relationship won't be honestly portrayed at the beginning of the trailer, with a very light atmosphere and cute jokes made at the 1967 film, but during the last third of the trailer the more emotional side of Travers's reasoning to not want Mary Poppins adapted is shown and there are hints to the meaning of the title reference to Mr. Banks.

It's absolutely wonderful to see Tom Hanks as the great Walt Disney, but even more so to see Thompson as what appears to be the one woman in the world who was not won over by Disney's charm. There are brief appearances from Paul Giamatti as Travers's chauffeur and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and B.J. Novak (The US Office, The Mindy Project) as the famous music composers, the Sherman Brothers.

Saving Mr. Banks is scheduled for a 17th January, 2014 release in the UK and a 20th December release in the US.

I bloody love this trailer. Tom Hanks may not be the most accurate, spot-on Walt Disney in the world, but he'll sure as hell be powerful and entertaining. Roll on January!
