Warner Bros. announced today that they were partnering up with, get this, WWE to produce a new straight-to-DVD and Blu-ray animated Flintstones movie, starring a cast of wrestlers, including John Cena and CM Punk. The irony being that John Cena recently replaced Fred Flintstone as the long-time face of Fruity Pebbles.
The press release (via Deadline) says Fred, Barney and the gang will be joined by "WWE staples including Vince McMagma (voiced by Vince McMahon) and such WWE superstars and divas including John Cenastone (John Cena) and CM Punkrock (CM Punk)," who will "take part in a prehistoric WWE main event." The film will come to Blu-ray, DVD, Video On Demand and digital download in early 2015.
Well this sounds just awful. I mean, The Flintstones hardly have a track record of great feature films, but I can't imagine the film studio of a professional wrestling company making a movie, starring wrestlers who - as WWE's own previous films have proven - cannot act at all, is in anyway going to change that. Concerns were raised about Seth MacFarlane's planned reboot of the TV series, but I think we can all safely say we'd much rather that than this. WWE Studios' president said he hopes the film will appeal to "loyal Flintstones enthusiasts". Well then, I'd say the response so far isn't what he was looking for.
This marks WWE's second Hanna-Barbera tag team endeavour: they're currently working on a Scooby Doo-WrestleMania film, expected next spring. Then we can all look forward to the Wacky Races film starring Alberto Del Rio, and The Undertaker as Top Cat. Grr.
