Futurama has had an interesting history, first airing on Fox from 1999 to 2003, before being cancelled after a 4-season run. When syndicated re-runs became very popular on Adult Swim, the show was relaunched with four straight-to-DVD movies, which Comedy Central aired as half hour episodes, becoming an unofficial fifth season. After this, Comedy Central commissioned a 26-episode sixth season followed by another one, with the same amount of episodes.
While this is disappointing news, executive producer David X. Cohen and creator Matt Groening are cautiously optimistic about the future and haven't discarded a potential return for the series, in another form, on another channel. With Groening adding, about the currently-final episode, "It’s a really satisfying ending. It’s an epic ending. If indeed it’s the ending."
Personally, I was a huge fan of the first four seasons of Futurama. After its return, I only managed to catch up with a few episodes, but I still enjoyed it it. It's sad to see it gone again, when other lesser shows like Family Guy are still airing.
Are you sad that Futurama got cancelled again?
