Watch: Three New Cars Toons, Tales From Radiator Springs

On Friday, during a US Disney Channel airing of Up, Pixar released three news Cars Toons, subtitled Shorty Shorts. For those who missed it - or those outside of the US who didn't get a chance to catch them - the shorts are now online at Disney.com.

Normally these videos are region locked, but embedding seems to bypass that; all three, now billed as Tales From Radiator Springs, are embedded below.

The three shorts are the first Cars Toons outside of the Mater's Tall Tales series, and indeed Mater makes only very fleeting appearances in them. This seems as though it might be the start of a new series, and that may not be a bad thing - the shorts were a lot of fun (I particularly liked Hiccups, although it does feature the least convincing hiccup sounds ever recorded), had absolutely brilliant animation (courtesy of Pixar Canada) and it should keep the kids happy, while keeping critics pacified that a Cars 3 isn't on the way.

The Toons were directed by Jeremy Lasky and produced by Mary Alice Drumm, and I certainly think they've done a bang up job. Now hopefully we can see some IncrediToons in the not-too-distant future...

  1. Love these shorts, I thought spinning was a pretty good one too. And it seems everyone wants more Incredibles, everyone except Pixar apparently. The way things are going, it's more likely to see a Bug's Life 2 before Incredibles 2.

  2. I don't think no Incredibles 2 has anything to do with Pixar not wanting it.

If there's going to be an Incredibles sequel, it's going to be written and directed by Brad Bird, and at the moment he's working on other things.

  3. Odd you should say that, as The Incredibles and A Bug's Life are the two Pixar films that I think really *need* sequels. Alas, it seems like neither are happening.

Brad Bird's all tied up with live-action work at the moment, and Pixar don't seem to want to do a sequel without him, so one ain't happening any time soon. As for A Bug's Life 2, sadly a lot of the voice cast have passed away since the film came out, (most notably Joe Ranft who voiced Heimlich), so that seems a long-shot too.

But yes, the shorts were a lot of fun!

  4. And hopefully those other things will turn out to be suitably awesome!

I really liked them. It was refreshing to see other Radiator Springs characters instead of only Mater. I think they finally understood he's better in small doses. As for the sequels, the only one I ever really wanted (aside from TS) is The Incredibles 2, but that's not happening in the near future. I never liked the idea of Cars 2 and although it was fun, it is the weakest Pixar film to date. And, as excited as I am for MU, I never saw the need for a sequel/prequel for Monsters, Inc. The same thing goes for Finding Nemo 2. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

  6. Yeah! I mean, Mater's not as bad as everyone makes out (certainly not Pixar's Jar Jar Binks!), but he does grate if overexposed. And Cars 2 heavily neglected the Radiator Springs crew, so it's great to see them in the limelight a bit - although I'd quite like to see a Finn McMissile or Francesco Bernouilli short too.

"We are not trying to entertain the critics. I'll take my chances with the public." -Walt Disney

I think John Lasseter would say this, too. So, IF there ever is a Cars 3, if the public likes it, who cares if the critics don't? Didn't we learn from Ratatouille that the critics aren't always right?

    That's just my opinion, anyway.

  8. Now *that* is the perfect quotation to sum up this situation - leave it to Walt to have came up with it!

Ideally, I don't really want to see a Cars 3. But, heck, at first I didn't want to see a Toy Story 3, and I have every faith in Pixar.

Everyone has different opinions, right? I wouldn't be excited for The Incredibles 2, and I'm a little skeptical about the rumors for Finding Nemo 2, but like you said, I trust Pixar, too! Anyway, I'm glad to hear your opinion on a Cars 3!

  10. Ooooh, not being excited for The Incredibles 2? Now that's not a widely shared opinion!

And I'm more than happy to offer it! :) Just shoot me an email if you ever want to discuss it in more detail!

Oh, I know, it's not normal. But hey, I'm unique, I guess! People on Facebook want a Cars 3, too, so I'll just keep remembering that Walt Disney quote! This is a great blog, by the way, so please keep it up! :)
