Just ahead of their first release of 2013 (The Croods, which opens this Friday), DreamWorks have rolled out the first full theatrical trailer for their summer flick, Turbo. And it's actually pretty good.
I didn't like the teaser DreamWorks put out back in December. It was one-note and generic, and seemed like something DreamWorks would put out back in the bad old days of Shark Tale and Over the Hedge. This trailer, however, was a lot of fun - head on over to iTunes Movie Trailers to check it out.
Sure, despite the odd-sounding premise of a snail wanting to become an Indy 500 racer, there is little original about the film - the whole "stay out of the human world!"/'super-talented animal helping out a down-on-his-luck human' shtick is ripped straight out of Ratatouille, as, seemingly, is the titular snail's slightly chubby brother, who seems to be an almost exact copy of Emile (species aside, of course), and all Ryan Reynold's Turbo needs to say to evoke a Cars theme more is "I am speed" - but not every film put out needs to be entirely original (Hollywood is, after all, a magpie culture). I also really liked the racer gang led by Samuel L. Jackson's Whiplash; the group are a lot of fun, and I got a lot of laughs out of that shadow line. And as for the animation, it's absolutely superb, the beautiful nitros-fuelled, floodlit tracks look absolutely stunning, and the film promises to be a visual treat!
Turbo is directed by feature-first-timer David Soren (Merry Madagascar) and also stars the voices of Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph and Michael Peña. A tie-in series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), is in production and starts streaming exclusively on Netflix in December. The film opens on 17th July in the US and 18th October in the UK.
